Shajan C Kumar, Dean

Shajan C Kumar is an experienced Design Editor, Fact Checker and Data Journalist with 30+ years of experience. He has worked with The India Today Group, The Indian Express Group, The New Indian Express Group, HT Media Group and The Dainik Bhaskar Group. He actively participated in the launch of 'Mint', the business daily from the HT Media group in an exclusive partnership with The Wall Street Journal. During this time, he had the chance to work closely with the world-renowned Visual Journalist Dr Mario Garcia (Sr.) and his team. He has also worked with Indo Asian News Service (IANS) as Art Director.

Shajan was an Associate Professor (Fashion Communication) at the Institute of Apparel Management, Gurgaon. Later he joined the Times School of Media at Bennett University as Assistant Professor. He has won the first Ejourno & Syntel Fellowship to work on the 'Impact of the Internet on visual Journalism'.

Shajan has taken classes on News Design/Fact Checking/Data Journalism at Madras Christian College; Chennai, Asian College of Journalism; Chennai, MASCOM; Kottayam, Indian Institute of Mass Communication; New Delhi, Kottayam, BSE Institute; Mumbai and NID; Ahmedabad. He has also conducted IFRA workshops on News Design.

Shajan is a Board of Studies (BoS) member of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication, Bhopal which is the oldest Journalism University in India.

Shajan was Head of the Fact-Checking & Data Visualisation wing of The Mathrubhumi Group before joining Mathrubhumi Media School.

Sandhya PP, Senior Faculty

Sandhya is a senior journalist with seventeen years of experience in Broadcast Journalism. She was associated with leading news channels like Asianet and Media One. She is the recipient of the State Television Award for outstanding television reporting. She was honoured with the Laadli National Media Award for socially responsible journalism. The other prominent awards she received include Laadli South Indian Media Award, Leela Menon Journalism Prize, Surendran Neeleswaram Memorial Award, and Indiwood Excellence Award. This vast industry experience reflects in her method of pedagogy. She is also pursuing her PhD in Cultural Studies at Kerala Kala Mandalam.

Sabarinath Bahuleyan, Senior Faculty

A software engineer turned journalist turned academician,Sabarinath has six years of media experience and over eight years of exposure as an academician.

A gold medalist in Communication and Journalism from the University of Kerala, Sabarinath started as a Trainee Sub Editor with DNA in Bengaluru. Later, he joined The New Indian Express in Kochi as Sub Editor. He also had a short stint in the visual media as Senior Reporter with Reporter news channel before moving as the Kerala Correspondent of The Week magazine and was based out of Thiruvananthapuram. He has also worked in the capacity of Team Leader, Corporate Communication, with EY.

He then moved into academics and was the Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Dr Palpu College of Arts and Science, Kollam, and Assistant Professor (on contract) with Sree Narayana College, Kollam.

During his post-graduation days, he was associated with video production and script writing for Doordashan, Thiruvananathapuram, anchoring a live phone-in programme Veettuvishesham on DD Malayalam and as script writer and voice-over artist for a weekly news programme State Scan aired on DD National.

Deepa Madathil, Faculty

After completing her MA in Mass Communication from Pondicherry University (Gold medallist), Deepa worked as a broadcast journalist at Asianet News for four years. She was also associated with a leading online portal. Deepa is currently pursuing her MPhil in Journalism at University of Calicut.
